For patients who meet certain medical criteria and do not have any of the contraindications, we may prescribe one of several medications for a 1 – 3 month period during the program to assist with curbing appetite and carbohydrate cravings. When properly used under medical supervision and in the context of a comprehensive medical or surgical weight loss program, these medications may be effective. For appropriate patients we will generally start with a one month trial of Phentermine and, depending on the response and tolerance, we may alter the dosage or try another medication. Others medications we have prescribed include Diethylproprian, Sibutramine, or Orlistat. Before prescribing these medications we review the expected effect as well as the side effect profile. These medications are generally safe and can be effective in the appropriate setting under medical supervision.
