Obesity is a chronic disease growing in epidemic rates that affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Being overweight, for many, is a precursor to obesity and its related medical problems. In the 1970s, around 6% of the United States was obese and this grew to around 11% by 1991. Then obesity rates have rocketed upwards to afflicting 20% of the population in 2000 and today approximately 30% of Americans suffer from obesity.

With obesity, come higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, degenerative joint disease, heart disease, cancer, depression, and many other diseases. With loss of physical health comes loss of emotional health, ability to perform daily activities, workplace discrimination and difficulty in developing personal relationships. The successful treatment of overweight and obese patients is the greatest challenge facing our healthcare system today. With over 65% of Americans overweight and over 30% obese, we are faced with a growing health epidemic with soaring healthcare costs of treating not just the weight but all of the associated medical problems.

The only effective treatment to achieve permanent and significant weight loss with improvement, if not resolution, of the many obesity-related medical problems is a comprehensive approach involving medical and surgical specialist care, careful nutritional planning, complete fitness training, behavioral psychological techniques and, when for appropriate individuals, pharmaceutical and surgical treatments.
